A customer from Ocean Grove visited recently and was inquiring about the best brands and types of paint Ocean Grove houses required to stand up to the town’s weather extremes.

Discussions about paint types and brands sorted out the most appropriate paint products for the job ahead but also revealed the weekend painter had overlooked the most important part of every paint job – preparation.

Yes, you’ve heard it again and again but we can’t say it enough. Every good paint job starts with good preparation. If you don’t properly prepare the surface you’re painting, then you’ll only have to repeat the job in the near future – a costly but easily avoidable exercise. It doesn’t matter whether the job is to paint Ocean Grove holiday homes or bush sheds in the back of beyond, preparation is crucial.

Where to start with preparation? Well, laying down quality dropsheets to protect everything is a good starting point, followed by a good washdown. Luckily we stock both dropsheets and a range of cleaning products specifically designed to remove impurities that can affect paint and filler adherence.

A session with sandpaper is also a good way to get surfaces back towards paint ready and there is a range of sandpaper and pads in various grades to help do the job.

Once you’ve removed impurities and flaky paint and whatever else is on your surface it’s time to consider the fillers and sealants required to fill those holes, gaps and cracks that take the shine off any finish. You’ll also need the right tools to apply those fillers, such as putty knives, maybe followed by another session with the sandpaper. Another washdown to remove all that sanding dust mightn’t go astray, either.

And then you’re probably ready for the masking tape so that even if you don’t have the steadiest hand you can still keep the paint off those surfaces that don’t require a new colour scheme.

You’re almost ready to start painting but before you do, make sure you’ve got the best paint brushes and rollers you can afford. You’ve invested in good paint, you’ve invested time in preparation so invest in good products to apply that paint and that way you’ll reduce the likelihood of a poor result.

Yes, it sounds like a lot of work – and this is just the basics of paint preparation – but the end result is worth the effort.
