Before selecting a paint colour, ask yourself the following questions:

  • How will the paint hue relate to the colour of your floors and existing furniture?
  • When will you be in the room most often?
  • At what time of day does each colour you are considering look its best?
  • Look out the window.  Is there anything that may come into play, like a red brick wall or deciduous trees?

The same colour may appear very different even on opposing walls.  Once you’ve narrowed down your selection, test the colours by painting big swatches a few walls.  Another trick is paint large pieces of MDF or poster board.  They can be easily moved around the room or rooms to see how your colours look in different light.

What type of paint do you need?  There are some basic rules.  Flat paints hide surface imperfections, and are best for ceilings and low-traffic areas and walls.   Semi gloss paints will resist moisture and provide a durable shine; use for bathrooms, kitchens and cornices.  High gloss paints have the most lustrous finish; use for window frames, doors, cabinets, and furniture.
